Garden chairs

Modern garden armchairs of my own design, crafted with concealed joinery for a clean, screw-free look. The high-gloss yacht varnish finish catches light beautifully, while the hand-woven seat — made from 3 mm nylon cord — adds both comfort and textural contrast.

The design started with Pinterest inspiration and evolved through a full-scale 1:1 paper drawing into a thin plywood template. Every component was cut from a single wide, thick plank using a bench saw, with all edges softened by hand router for a refined, rounded profile.

An earlier prototype used a simpler wood-protection finish and a lighter seat frame that proved too delicate. This final version addresses both: the frame is sturdier, and the finish deepens from stain into yacht varnish for lasting outdoor durability.

Build notes: This project was a hands-on education — concealed screw joinery, chair rigidity, wood staining and varnishing, and nylon cord weaving. On the material front: evergreen wood sheds considerable resin, making it less than ideal for furniture. And a practical reminder: patience with drying times between stain and varnish pays off.
